How to Fix Cloudy Pool Water (Without Draining It)
Cloudy pool water is almost always one of five problems. Here's the systematic way we diagnose and fix it — no drain, no guesswork.

Call a pool pro about cloudy water and a good one will ask five questions before touching a chemical. Here's how we work the problem.
1. Is it the filter?
Check pressure. If it's 8–10 PSI above clean baseline, backwash (DE/sand) or rinse the cartridge. Clean filters fix cloudy water faster than any chemical.
2. Is chlorine holding?
Test free chlorine. Under 1 ppm in summer = you have a sanitizer shortfall. Shock to 10× combined chlorine. Don't skip this — chlorine does the work, not clarifier.
3. Is pH above 7.8?
High pH scales water and drops chlorine effectiveness. Drop pH to 7.4–7.6 with muriatic or dry acid.
4. Is calcium hardness over 400?
Over-hard water clouds up in Florida heat. Partial drain-and-refill is the real fix; sequestrants are a band-aid.
5. Is it early algae?
Green tinge? Slippery walls? Brush the whole pool, shock, and run the pump 24 hours. Clarifier only helps after the underlying issue is handled.
When to call us
If you've worked all five and water isn't clearing in 48 hours, the problem is usually filter media condition or a dead pump impeller. Both fixable same-week, no draining.
